How we handle your data

KnowYourPlant is built to help people identify plants, manage care, and review likely issues from photos. This page explains what we collect, why we use it, and the choices you have.

Last updated April 27, 2026

1. Information we collect

We collect only the information needed to run the product and improve care guidance. Depending on how you use the app, this can include:

  • Photos you upload for plant identification, doctor checks, room scans, or plant profile images.
  • Plant details you save, such as nickname, species match, room assignment, notes, and care history.
  • Room and environment information you provide or scan, such as room photos, light or humidity notes, room names, and plant placement details.
  • Approximate location, city, region, or manually entered area if you enable weather-aware schedules. We do not need precise location for ordinary plant care features.
  • Account details such as email address and sign-in provider when you create or connect an account.
  • Basic device and usage data, including app version, device identifier used for guest limits, and product events needed for quota, diagnostics, and abuse prevention.
  • Subscription and entitlement state, including whether you have access to paid features.
  • Support messages you send us, including your contact details, issue description, troubleshooting information, and any follow-up correspondence.
  • When you purchase, renew, or restore an iOS subscription through Apple’s In-App Purchase system, Apple may provide limited transaction data such as product identifiers, transaction or original transaction identifiers, purchase and renewal dates, expiration details, storefront, and subscription status so we can validate the purchase and unlock the correct features.

2. How we use information

We use the information above to deliver core product features, including plant identification, diagnosis support, saved garden history, reminders, room analysis, weather-aware schedules, quota enforcement, account recovery, subscription validation, purchase restoration, and customer support.

We may also use aggregated or de-identified information to measure reliability, understand feature usage, and improve model quality, performance, and safety.

3. Subscription, billing, and restore data

When you start, renew, restore, or otherwise manage an iOS subscription, we may receive limited purchase and entitlement information from Apple or from our subscription service providers. This may include product identifiers, subscription status, renewal or expiration dates, transaction or original transaction identifiers, storefront, and related receipt-validation data.

We use this information to activate paid features, restore access across devices or sessions, detect fraud, handle support requests, maintain accounting records, and comply with legal obligations. We do not receive your full payment card number or other full card credentials from Apple for in-app purchases.

4. Photos and AI-generated results

Plant photos may be processed by AI systems and service providers we use to generate identification or diagnosis results. These results are probabilistic and may be incomplete or incorrect.

If you save a plant, we may keep the associated photo and result metadata so you can view that plant again later, continue care flows, and revisit previous results.

5. Guest use and connected accounts

You may start using some features before signing in. In that case, we may temporarily associate saved content and scan usage with a device-scoped identifier. If you later create or sign in to an account, we may move eligible guest data into that account so your earlier scans and saved plants remain available.

6. Sharing and service providers

We do not sell your personal information. We may share data with service providers who help us operate the app, such as hosting, storage, authentication, analytics, crash reporting, payments, AI processing, and weather data providers. These providers are expected to process data only for the services they provide to us.

For iOS in-app purchases, Apple processes the payment transaction under Apple’s own terms and privacy practices. We do not receive your full payment card details, but we may receive limited purchase and subscription status data from Apple to activate paid features, restore purchases, prevent fraud, handle support requests, and keep required accounting records.

7. Data retention

We keep data for as long as needed to operate the product, maintain your saved content, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and prevent abuse. If you request deletion, we will remove or anonymize personal data unless we are required to keep certain records for legal, accounting, tax, security, or fraud-prevention reasons.

Subscription transaction records and related entitlement logs may be retained after account deletion where reasonably necessary to comply with financial, tax, platform, or audit requirements and to document refunds, chargebacks, or abuse-prevention decisions.

8. Your choices

You can review privacy actions in the app, including data export and account deletion when those controls are available in your build. You can also stop using the service, remove app permissions, or request deletion through the support form by choosing “Data deletion request.”

If you subscribed through Apple, you can manage or cancel your subscription in your Apple ID or App Store subscription settings. Refund requests for Apple-billed purchases are handled by Apple under Apple’s policies.

9. International transfers

Our service providers and infrastructure may process information in countries other than the one where you live. Where required, we take reasonable steps to protect personal information transferred across borders using contractual or operational safeguards appropriate to the context.

10. Children’s privacy

KnowYourPlant is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal data to us, contact us so we can review and delete it if appropriate.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we may update the in-app links, update this page, or provide other notice where appropriate. The date at the top shows the latest revision.

12. Contact

If you have questions about this Privacy Policy or how your data is handled, contact us at ops@knowyourplant.app or use the support form. For deletion requests, choose “Data deletion request.”
